Who are we?

We are an award winning Chartered Architects practice, located within the village of Appley Bridge, Lancashire. Over the past thirty years our Practice has enjoyed recognition for its success through a number of design awards, quite recently receiving the 2012 Wigan Council Urban Design Award for residential works within a Conservation Area, as well as hundreds of satisfied clients. Throughout this time we have developed a reputation for quality design across a range of sectors and disciplines including; country homes, works with Listed Buildings, barn conversions as well as contemporary homes and commercial properties. Our work covers a wide range of locations across the North West and Nationally, however this has not limited our knowledge and relationship of the local area, which is extensive and intimate.

Our current team comprises of a dedicated design office and administrative staff, each member bringing a unique and ranging knowledge from various experience and educational backgrounds, allowing our office to deliver on a wide range of projects.

Peter Dickinson
Chartered Architect, Principal

Qualifications: Dipl. Arch

Peter Dickinson attended the Oxford School of Architecture in 1964, graduating in 1969, and subsequently qualified as an architect in 1971.Peter worked for Shankland Cox in Liverpool for five years followed by two years at Robert Matthew Johnson & Partners in Preston. He then commenced in practice on his own account in 1978. Peter oversees all aspects of the practice, from client meetings and project inception through to Practical Completion.

Kathy Dickinson
Practice Manager

Qualifications: BSc Hons Applied Mathematics.

Kathy’s working life started in the family flower business. She went on to study and later teach mathematics at Manchester Polytechnic and then Wigan College. Kathy’s husband, Peter, founded the practice over forty years ago. During this time her involvement with the practice progressed to the point where she left teaching in 2000 to work solely in the practice. As the principle Practice Manager Kathy oversees all non-design aspects of Peter Dickinson Architects.

Diane Close
Practice Secretary

Diane joined Peter Dickinson Architects in 2011 bringing with her significant experience having previous worked at Bradshaw Gass + Hope of Bolton, where she was a receptionist for 9 years. Diane previous worked in Sales + Marketing and was also a Manager for a Business Centre in Manchester. Diane’s role at Peter Dickinson Architects involves the essential administration of the practice and providing the vital link between clients and the design staff.

David Winstanley
Senior Architectural Technologist

Qualifications: HNC Building studies.

Dave completed his HNC in Building Studies in 1990 after studying at Wigan College. He joined Peter Dickinson Architects in March 1995 after working for a practice in Manchester for five years. His role involves liaising with the Principal Architect and Clients to produce and develop drawings for Client approval, planning applications, building regulation applications and construction. Dave also liaises with the Client and contractor during the contract period and runs the day-to-day requirements of the drawing office.

Jack Smedley
Architectural Assistant

Qualifications: BA (hons) RIBA Part 1

Jack joined Peter Dickinson Architects as an Architectural Assistant in August 2021 to undertake Stage 1 of his Professional Experience on the road to becoming a Chartered Architect. This came following his graduation from the University of Salford where he completed his degree in Architecture (Part I).

After completing 12 months’ experience, Jack has returned to the University of Salford to complete his Master of Architecture (Part II) qualification, and currently works at the practice part-time alongside his studies. Jack’s role includes the preparation of sketch schemes, CAD drawings and 3D models as well as preparing and submitting Planning Applications.

Thomas Smith
Project Architect

Qualifications: PG.Cert, M.Arch, BA Hons.

Peter Dickinson Architects took on Tom in October 2010 as part of his Stage 1 Professional Experience placement on the road to becoming a Chartered Architect. After completing this year out Tom returned to the University of Huddersfield to complete his Master of Architecture qualification. Upon completing his two-year Master’s degree and achieving the grade of Distinction, Tom gladly accepted the offer to return to Peter Dickinson Architects on a full time basis.

Tom qualified as an Architect in December 2015 and is currently Project Architect on various projects from New Build Domestic Projects to commercial projects of varying scales.
