Bio: The Legacy – Rainbow House is a national charity working with children with acquired brain injury, multiple disabilities and complex health needs. They are based at a 12-acre site in Mawdesley, Lancashire but offer our services to children from across the UK. The Legacy – Rainbow House approached Peter Dickinson Architects with the desire to extend their current facilities to provide greater facilities than their current accommodation provides.
Working with a tight budget Peter Dickinson Architects were commissioned to design a facility to accommodate additional classroom space, as well as all serving facilities – such as offices, disabled changing facilities and recreational space. The scheme proposed by Peter Dickinson Architects allows a flexible educational space that can be adapted to the varying requirements of the client and the users of Rainbow House. The proposed scheme shares the existing external recreational space with the existing facility.
The final scheme is composed of a simple palette of two timber clad elements with slate tile roofs, separated by a glazed element which houses the entrance and recreational areas.
